A Kitchen Vignette (Preface from the book)
My stomach is growling… Julie is having fun in the kitchen
combining foods
into a magnificent offering. I can smell it with each breath. Breaths that are getting
deeper and more relaxed
as the aromas get richer and more tantalizing.
I can hear her scurrying around in the kitchen… dancing
really…. and the
utensils in the kitchen being used…. Wooden spoons, the
knife against the chopping
board. The rattling of pots and pans sliding onto the stove top,
boiling bubbling
liquids, the sound of the oven door opening.
I walk by the kitchen door on my way to my office and take a peek to see
counters ablaze in the color of fresh cut garden vegetables, herb and
spice canisters…
a delightful chaos. A spiral notebook lays open with beautiful
handwriting
penning recipes and ideas from Julie’s hand.
Julie once remarked while smiling ... at me… after a meal
she had just joyfully
prepared, “Food
that is made with happiness tastes better, and is far more healing
than just plain organic
food.” I am wondering how much longer it will be
before I
can sit down to her delicious, healing and happy food and receive her
smile from
across the table!
Elliott Marie is setting the table and Ian is running out the back door
to pick
more parsley and cilantro from the garden. These are all signs that the
meal is
almost complete! I won’t have to wait long now. My stomach
has grown ravenous
in its hunger.
How did Julie come to have such a oneness with her food and its
preparation?
Was it her growing up on a farm in Kentucky where her Mom and relatives
would
use any excuse to prepare grand meals? Was it her passion for health
that moved
her at an early age to choose health foods rather than processed foods?
In fact, is it
any coincidence that she chose to marry me, at the time I was owner and
chef of
20 Carrots Health Food Store and restaurant, where we met? Hum!?
Are we seeing a thread here of many influences that have conspired to
show
Julie’s life long love affair with preparing food? Julie is never happier than when
she
is sharing her
excitement for health and food with her family through her cooking.
It is however a happiness that is grounded and focused in her love to
bring all the
ingredients together for a wonderful meal. The shopping and
transporting, the
gardening, the harvesting, the cleaning and cutting, the measuring and
mixing, the
logistics, the singing and the dancing in the kitchen—all of
this is the background
to her presentation that we simply enjoy.
We are eating and I am nourished with her food—its texture,
flavor and color.
As we sit at the dining room table, the well-used recipe book is behind
her on
the counter in the kitchen. She begins to reach for it to make an
entry, but I hold
her reaching hand to my lips… as I ravish her smile.
Yes… I am responsible for
the slight delay in the manuscript becoming the book you are now
holding.
But please
don’t you delay reaching for this book so laden with the
unique and
earthy rhythm of
Julie’s creativity. May you too feel Julie’s dance
in these recipes
that they came from!
